Retired M/Sgt. Marvin L. Cappen

Retired M/Sgt. Marvin L. Cappen, age 81, of Nickerson, NE passed away Friday, July 13, 2012 at Fremont Area Medical Center.

Marvin was born March 24, 1931 in Linwood, NE to George A. and Addie E. (Fisher) Cappen. Marvin was confirmed at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winslow, NE on July 1, 1945. He graduated from Hooper High School in 1949. Marvin joined the Army-Air Force on November 11, 1951. He retired from the Air Force on November 30, 1973. Most of his military service was served state-side with the exception of serving in Korea and Guam during the Korean War, in Iceland, Thailand during the Vietnam War and a tour in Germany with his family. Upon retirement from the Air Force, Marvin moved to Fremont and worked at Little Audrey’s and what was then Flynn and Larsen (now Larsen International).

Marvin married Edith “Faye” Bledsoe Thurman on September 21, 1966 in Amarillo, TX.

Marvin enjoyed bowling on several leagues. He also enjoyed boating and camping with his family and friends. He and his wife Faye served as campground hosts for many years at Fremont State Lakes until earlier this year when Marv’s health kept them from continuing.

Marvin was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Fremont. He was also a 37 year member of Dodge County REACT, joining six months after the charter date. He was a Dodge County Reserve Deputy from 1978-1985 and he was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post # 854.

Survivors include: wife – Faye; his children – Rob and wife Brenda Thurman of Nickerson, NE, Lou and husband David Polke of Mesa, AZ, Tom and wife Kristin Ashburn of Lincoln, NE, Terri and husband Larry Jacob and Sherry and husband Steven Reandeau, all of Fremont, NE; 10 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Funeral Service will be 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Fremont, NE. The Rev. Tim Anderson will officiate. Visitation with family receiving friends will be 6-8 P.M. Monday at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at church Tuesday. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery, Fremont with military honors conducted by the Fremont Honor Guard of V.F.W. Post #854 and American Legion Post #20.

He was preceded in death by: parents; and an infant sister, Darlene.
